Jazz Church began in 2010 led by Adam Sanders and Rev’d Jayne Webb at Shirley Methodist Church. It was a new expression of Christian worship bringing jazz and church together with regular services featuring jazz arrangements of church music, musical improvisation and exploration of theological themes. Eventually a number of ensembles were established including a big band and were supported by a tech team. Musical arrangements by Adam Sanders and A. Paul Douglas formed the backbone of a growing musical library. Two albums were recorded and the music was featured on BBC Radio Two and the ensembles led worship around the country, including a slot at Greenbelt Festival.
In 2017 a team was formed to launch a new worshipping congregation in Kings Heath, Birmingham named Jazz Community Church drawing on the rich musical heritage and theological ideas. The church met regularly improvising life and following Jesus together for a little over five years hosting weekly worship services, small groups, Jazz Tots stay and play sessions, Soak creative meditation evenings, Carols services and much more.
Today the musical heritage is available here for you to take the story forward in your local context. If you need any help, support, advice or encouragement do get in touch – we would love to connect with you!
